چکیده

In a finite partially ordered set, Prob(x > y) denotes the proportion of linear extensions in which element x appears above element y. In 1969, S. S. Kislitsyn conjectured that in every finite poset which is not a chain, there exists a pair (x, y) for which 1/3 ≤ Prob(x > y) ≤ 2/3. In 1984, J. Kahn and M. Saks showed that there exists a pair (x, y) with 3/11 < Prob(x > y) < 8/11, but the full 1/3—2/3 conjecture remains open and has been listed among ORDER’s featured unsolved problems for more than 10 years. In this paper, we show that that there exists a pair (x, y) for which (5 − √ 5)/10 ≤ Prob(x > y) ≤ (5 + √ 5)/10. The proof depends on an application of the Ahlswede-Daykin inequality to prove a special case of a conjecture which we call the Cross Product Conjecture. Our proof also requires the full force of the Kahn/Saks approach—in particular, it requires the Alexandrov/Fenchel inequalities for mixed volumes. We extend our result on balancing pairs to a class of countably infinite partially ordered sets where the 1/3—2/3 conjecture is false, and our bound is best possible. Finally, we obtain improved bounds for the time required to sort using comparisons in the presence of partial information. Mathematics Subject Classification (1991). 06A07, 06A10.

Quaternionic Product of Circles and Cycles and Octonionic Product for Pairs of Circles

This paper concerns with a product of circles induced by the quaternionic product considered in a projective manner. Several properties of this composition law are derived and on this way we arrive at some special numbers as roots or powers of unit. We extend this product to cycles as oriented circles and to pairs of circles by using the algebra of octonions. Three applications of the given pro...

Nonhomogeneous analytic families of trees

We consider a dichotomy for analytic families of trees stating that either there is a colouring of the nodes for which all but finitely many levels of every tree are nonhomogeneous, or else the family contains an uncountable antichain. This dichotomy implies that every nontrivial Souslin poset satisfying the countable chain condition adds a splitting real. We then reduce the dichotomy to a conj...

کاربرد روشهای هیورستیک اولویت وزنی و طولانی ترین زمان عملیات (LCR) متعادل سازی خطوط مونتاژ و تاثیر آن بر عملکرد سازمان

According to researches, one of the productivity barriers among many organizations is assembly line balancing problem, which needs scientific models to be solved. This paper examines the effect of line balancing on the functioning of assembly line in two sections. In the first section, after studying the theoretic bases and reviewing the literature, we have discussed the assembly concepts, diff...

Frankl's Conjecture for a subclass of semimodular lattices

In this paper, we prove Frankl's Conjecture for an upper semimodular lattice $L$ such that $|J(L)setminus A(L)| leq 3$, where $J(L)$ and $A(L)$ are the set of join-irreducible elements and the set of atoms respectively. It is known that the class of planar lattices is contained in the class of dismantlable lattices and the class of dismantlable lattices is contained in the class of lattices ha...
